Eighteen years ago, when the breeders at lady gouldian finch. com saw their first gouldian finch, they were told that it was not a species to consider breeding. Not only was it fragile, but to prove a point, it was endangered. Hands off! The beauty of the birds inspired and challenged these breeders, and today the bird is healthier than ever, but still endangered in Australia. The primary reasons for its weak numbers are the results of insufficient food sources in its natural habitat due to a high number of fires and having to compete with grazing cattle. Another factor inhibiting the recovery of the gouldian finch is a high level of infection by an endoparasitic mite which affects its respiratory system.
